Opening.

Marleen claims she paid for the tow by selling the gun; Natalie shows her the gun then runs out of the car.

Marleen leaves the girls in the car while she goes to work the night shift.

Marlene goes to get her car from the tow yard, but she doesn’t have the money to pay and the man demands payment another way.

Marlene’s boss Mr. Patel finds her washing her girls in the store bathroom; he realizes she is homeless and ends up giving her his gun for self-protection.

The homeless man Vincent Hopper gives Marlene his lottery ticket as they sit talking by the fire in the park, then daughter Natalie runs up crying that the car’s gone with little sister Abby in it.

Marlene brings the girls to a homeless shelter and a teenage girl named Vita tries to keep the last bed for herself.
